Welsh First Minister Rejects State Banquet Invitation with Donald Trump

Wales’ Leader Morgan refused an invitation to an official dinner with the US President in the royal residence

Wales’ top official Eluned Morgan declined an invitation to be present at an official dinner for US President Donald Trump at the historic castle.

President Trump touched down in the UK capital on Tuesday evening with his wife Melania during his second official trip to the UK.

A government representative stated that Morgan wished to support fellow lawmakers at an incredibly difficult period after the passing of an assembly representative.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson clarified that an informal engagement had been scheduled between Morgan and fellow MSs in light of the tragedy.

Conservative Senedd leader Millar called the move as “snub” likely to perceived negatively across the United States labeling it “highly disappointing”.

He emphasized that the nation should be represented at the major event, adding that other ministers might have attended in her place.

According to government analysis, America is the second most valuable export markets to Wales, though the EU remains a larger market overall.

Earlier this year, Morgan cautioned that Wales might be harder hit from US tariffs due to a stronger dependence on goods exports.

Negotiations on eliminating on taxes for British steel are currently on hold, with American representatives voicing concern about upcoming shifts within the industry.

While she had previously congratulated the president on his re-election and stressed the value of US–Wales relations, in the past previously described the president as “highly unorthodox” during an interview.

In her reply declining the invitation, Morgan according to sources wrote gratitude to the monarch stressing that her focus was supporting colleagues during a challenging time.

She is among several prominent leader who decline the event. Liberal Democrat leader Davey had earlier stated his intention to boycott the event in protest over the situation in Gaza.

In contrast, the Scottish leader confirmed participation in the royal banquet.

Meanwhile, Plaid Cymru figures openly questioned the decision to host Trump with official ceremonies, warning how it could encourage extremism at home as well as overseas.
