TikTok Provides The Community Control to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to cut down on the quantity of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the service announced that it currently hosts more than 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a full-scale launch. This shift aligns with a rise in AI-generated material, fueled by recent content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the quickest rising video streams on another major platform only show clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this output is classified as mass-produced AI material, a label for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or surreal.

Our research shows that numerous viewers enjoy content produced via AI tools, from digital art to science explainers, and we want to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, based on their own likes,” stated a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok announced that there are currently over a billion videos on its network identified as made with AI. Collectively, over 100 mn media items are added to the service each day, making clips made by AI a relatively small part of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be in a position to decrease or raise the amount of AI-generated videos they view by using the content preference feature in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the filter include news, style, aesthetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s rules require content makers to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids malicious deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any believable AI video that is unmarked can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the service will now apply an “AI-made” label to content produced via its built-in AI features, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This measure is designed to help prevent users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

The platform is also establishing a $2m educational fund for professionals and organizations to develop informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will assist educational bodies dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has defended its content review process, following discussion over intentions to lay off hundreds of content moderators in Britain. TikTok is expected to eliminate 439 jobs in its content moderation team in its British office, with worker representatives and internet security professionals voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A company official stated that people-led review would remain essential, but automated tools can shield workers by removing the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by people. The company stated a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content seen by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to balance staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with dangerous material as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
