The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.

Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
