Sopranos Mastermind David Chase to Write HBO Limited Series on CIA Drug Program
David Chase is set for a return to the small screen. The iconic mob drama visionary will write Project MKUltra, a mini-series centered around the Central Intelligence Agency's covert cold war-era mind control program for the premium network.
Exploring the Project
This new venture, initially revealed by entertainment insiders, will be Chase's initial TV project since the groundbreaking HBO crime series. This intense narrative, inspired by the author's non-fiction work "Project Mind Control", zeroes in on the notorious scientist, referred to as the "dark magician" who oversaw Project MKUltra, the agency's covert hallucinogen experiments that tested psychedelic substances, hypnotic techniques, and physical coercion on willing and unwilling subjects from the early 1950s until it was terminated in the early 1970s.
The Experiments
The scientist directed such experiments in the name of state safety, to counter the alleged danger of Russian and Chinese “brainwashing” techniques. He's also known as the inadvertent father of the psychedelic movement, as he introduced the substance to the CIA in the 1950s, in an effort to explore the potential of controlling the human mind. Some test subjects were volunteers from the CIA, armed forces personnel and university attendees who had awareness of the nature of the studies. Additional subjects, on the other hand, were mental patients, incarcerated persons, drug addicts, and prostitutes forced or misled into substance administration that in some cases resulted in long-term harm.
Creator's Background
Chase won multiple Emmy Awards for his hit series, a complex drama about a New Jersey crime syndicate widely credited with ushering in the peak era of “prestige” television. Since the show, starring the late James Gandolfini, wrapped in 2007, Chase has mostly focused on feature films. He authored, helmed, and produced the 2012 film Not Fade Away. He also co-wrote and produced "The Many Saints of Newark", a Sopranos prequel featuring Gandolfini’s son, that debuted in 2021.
TV Comeback
His return to television follows he stated the era of ambitious television series in some ways shaped by the Sopranos to be a "temporary phase" that is now over. Speaking to a major publication for the show’s 25th anniversary, the septuagenarian asserted that he had been instructed to "simplify" his scripts in meetings with executives and warned against producing television that was too complex.
He linked that perspective in partly to his encounter attempting to develop a show with the writer Hannah Fidell about a luxury escort who ends up in federal protection. In multiple discussions with producers, he said, they were told "the harsh reality" that it was too complex. "What audience is this targeting?" he said. “I guess the stockholders?”
"It appears we are disoriented, and viewers struggle to concentrate, hence we cannot create content that is overly logical, engaging, and demands focus from the audience," he continued. "Regarding streaming leaders? The situation is deteriorating. We are reverting to previous conditions."
