Google Plans Investment of $15bn to Establish AI Data Hub in the Indian Subcontinent

Computing Infrastructure
India ranks as a top choice for data centers because of its low data costs and swiftly increasing internet user base.

The parent firm of Google Alphabet Inc. will invest $15bn for constructing an AI computing facility in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

This center, that is planned in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam city, will become a segment of Google's international system of AI centres distributed over a dozen nations.

"It's the largest AI facility that we are going to be investing in across the globe, apart from the United States of America," Thomas Kurien announced at an event in the capital city of Delhi on Tuesday, mentioning that the financial commitment will be allocated over the next five years.

This declaration comes at a time American President Donald Trump has been asking US firms to focus on local funding.

The Expanding Position of India in AI Computing

The nation has risen as a key destination for AI data centers. India's low data costs and swiftly increasing online population have turned it into a hub for cloud and AI expansion for major tech firms.

"The infrastructure will deliver our industry-leading technology to businesses and consumers in India, speeding up AI development and promoting progress across the country," said Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.

Initiative Particulars

An official contract to finalise the venture will be signed on Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh government said.

"It is a massive leap for the digital progression of our state, technological innovation, and global standing," said the minister for technology Minister Nara Lokesh.

This initiative will merge cloud and AI infrastructure with green energy infrastructure and an enhanced optical fiber network.

The State's Data Hub Strategy

The project is included in the local administration's blueprint to establish 6GW of computing facility capacity by the year 2029.

Data centers are tangible infrastructures that accommodate the computing and networking equipment that organizations use to accumulate, handle, retain, and circulate data.

These include hosting servers, data storage systems and connectivity devices like firewalls and routers, along with the required energy and climate management infrastructure to run them.

Investment Incentives

Within the state, the government has been offering reduced-cost property and electricity to entice international investors.

Industry Growth

India's data centre industry has grown rapidly during the last five years, crossing the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and nearly tripling its 2019 capacity.
