Far-Right Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's Incoming President.
In a decisive runoff election, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidency in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having earlier been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Platform Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his strong Catholic views and regard for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely centered on promises to address growing violence and significantly curb immigration.
He repeatedly pointed to immigrants, particularly the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the race, he issued an final demand for them to exit before the inauguration or face deportation.
