Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Squad While Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby team selection update

Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the fall matches, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash also miss out due to fitness concerns, while number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new member in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "backup".

After facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with the two players set to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected with Farrell deciding not to selecting the province's Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, but the 23-year-old is additionally a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the only new name in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's URC league matches so far and featured in the second string's defeat by the English in Bristol earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.

Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.

Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is set to deputise for Doris if the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
