An Down Under young sportsman has tragically died after being struck by a cricket ball during a practice session in Melbourne.

The teenage player was training in cricket cages in Ferntree Gully on the weekday when he was hit in the head or neck by a ball from an mechanical bowler. It's believed he was using a helmet at the moment of the incident.

Emergency services were called to the location just prior to 5 PM local time and the young man was rushed to Monash Children's Hospital in grave state. He was placed on life support but succumbed to his injuries on the following day.

Community Reaction and Condolences

The boy's community sports organization expressed they were "completely heartbroken" by the "tragic passing" of one of their players and that the youngster's death "will impact by everyone in our sports family".

"I know how heavily this news will impact across our local area and we will provide any and all support we can to our clubs and cricket family," stated the local cricket association president.

In a social media post, the young man's cricket club extended their sympathies to his loved ones and friends and "to all of those who were acquainted with him and the joy that he brought".

"We ask you to please respect the privacy of the loved ones during this challenging period," the post added.

Protective Considerations in Cricket

This tragedy occurs just over a ten years after another Australian cricketer died after being struck on the neck by a ball while batting in a national tournament.

That earlier tragedy, for which authorities determined no-one was to blame, sparked improvements to safety equipment for those participating in the sport.
