The tragic funicular accident in Lisbon that cost sixteen people in the start of the ninth month was triggered by a damaged wire, according to the official probe published on Monday.

This investigation has recommended that Portugal's capital's comparable cable cars remain halted until their safety can be thoroughly assured.

Details of the Deadly Event

This collision took place when the historic Glória funicular derailed and smashed into a structure, shocking the city and highlighting significant worries about the safety of historic tourist attractions.

The nation's air and rail accident investigations bureau (the bureau) stated that a wire joining two cabins had detached moments before the tragedy on the third of September.

Preliminary Findings

This preliminary report stated that the line was not up to the required standards established by the city's transit authority.

The cable failed to comply with the specifications in force to be used for the Glória cable car.

The detailed report further recommended that the remaining funiculars in the capital must remain out of service until inspectors can ensure they have adequate stopping mechanisms designed of immobilising the vehicles in the case of a wire failure.

Victims and Casualties

Among the 16 fatalities, eleven were foreign nationals, including three UK individuals, two Korean nationals, two Canadian nationals, one Frenchwoman, one Swiss, an American, and one Ukrainian national.

This crash also injured approximately 20 persons, including 3 British citizens.

The national victims featured 4 employees from the identical social care institution, whose premises are located at the top of the sharp side road used by the funicular.

Historical Context

The Glória funicular began operation in the late 19th century, utilizing a method of balancing weights to drive its two wagons along its long track ascending and descending a sharp hill.

The probers also stated that the driver had applied the vehicle's brakes, but they were incapable to prevent the vehicle without the function of the counterweight system.
