‘A Man Who Will Be Deeply Missed’: The Actress Meg Ryan Posts Heartfelt Homage to Director Rob Reiner
The actress Meg Ryan has shared a moving homage to the late director Rob Reiner, under whose direction she worked in the hit romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.
A Tragic Discovery
Reiner was located lifeless with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home over the weekend.
“How we will long for this man…” the actress posted on Instagram, accompanying a photo of them together. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle [sic], for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales, and in laughter. We appreciate your faith in human goodness and your deep patriotism.”
Legal Proceedings Unfold
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and made a court appearance today. He’s being held without bail. It’s been reported that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father deceased.
“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan went on to write. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”
Children Share Their Grief
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy issued words today. “No words can convey the constant, profound sorrow we feel,” they said. “The tragic, shattering loss of our parents is an experience no one should have to face. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”
Colleagues and Friends Remember
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, joined in remembering Reiner via comments shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” the tribute noted. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. Freedom was his key offering. He listened to ideas and included you in the creative journey. Everyone felt like part of a crew. His direction was a gift, but his legacy is broader.”
An Enduring Filmography
When Harry Met Sally was a hit with both critics and audiences in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and securing Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner was introduced to Michele Singer Reiner whilst filming When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a friend and director.
Reiner’s notable filmography also included classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were married for 36 years.
